Mendez SoHo, Soho Strut and The Florence Belsky Foundation are delighted to announce the Third and Final Salon of the Spring 2017 Season featuring the Rebecca Kelly Ballet. Rebecca Kelly and Craig Brashear, her husband and modern dance partner, founded Rebecca Kelly Ballet in 1979. Since then, Rebecca has created more than 75 contemporary and classical works for her own and other companies. The ensemble has performed in major New York City theaters and toured and taught throughout the US and Europe.
Three characteristics have remained constant in Kelly's work: 1) attention to topical and humanistic issues, 2) cultivation and harmonization of the individuality and diversity of her dancers, and 3) focus on the purity of the dance and dancer first, rather than ornamentation of costume or settings. Kelly’s abstract and narrative ballets fuse classical dance with modern forms resulting in an arresting lyrical earthy quality. Themes range from issues about the environment and astute social commentary, to poetical works involving the sheer energy and beauty of the highly skilled dancer and the complex use of the body.
After talking about the process of transforming abstract ideas into movement and form, as well as their educational endeavors in SoHo and the Adirondacks, Kelly and Brashear will be available for one-on-one interaction with Salon attendees.
There is no charge for admission to the Salons, however, reservations are required.
